Chicagoland Breweries of the Past

yet still visible today to the *trained eye

At left and below: the former P. Schoenhofen brewery at 18th & Canalport.

In addition to these buildings, 3 more still stand as reminders of the brewery.
These ornate buildings are worth a visit and for sale as of Feb. 2002.

These structures probably are collectively the largest piece of breweriana in Chicagoland

At right, the former office of Canadian Ace Brewing Company is still in use at 3900 S Union in Chicago.
Many old breweries fall victim to the wrecking ball. Some survive offering no visual clues to current occupants about their
beery past. This building is still in use today as Stevens Exhibits and is in great shape. I wonder if any people who work there, and love beer, also know they work in an old brewery?

*Phil Pospychala, co-author of the book, The Great Chicago Beer Cans, narrated a bus tour a few years ago of 13 locations in Chicago that formerly were the home to brewery operations. The webmaster revisited some of these sites in February of 2002, using Phil's book and bus tour notes provided as a reference.

The pictures on this page and on the next one are examples of what remains at these sites.
